Social media management vs content creation: what your brand needs each month

Brands often ask for “social media” and receive quotes that cannot be compared, because one agency priced content and another priced account management. This guide separates the two, shows what a month of work looks like, and helps you decide what to ask for.

Two different jobs

Content creation is making the material: Reels, short videos, photography, graphics and captions. Social media management is running the accounts: planning the calendar, publishing, replying to comments and messages, and reporting on results.

You can buy either one alone. A brand with an in-house marketer may only need a monthly content shoot. A brand with good content but no time may only need management. Most need both, and it works best when the same team does both, because the people who see what performs are the ones planning the next shoot.

What a month looks like

A typical monthly cycle runs like this:

  • Week 1: review last month’s results, agree themes, campaigns and key dates
  • Week 1–2: write the content calendar and get it approved
  • Week 2: one or two batch shoot days for video and photography
  • Week 2–3: editing, design, captions in English and Arabic
  • Ongoing: publishing, community replies and paid promotion
  • Month end: a report with what worked and what changes next

Why batch shooting saves money

Filming one Reel at a time is the expensive way to make content. A planned shoot day with a shot list can produce a month of videos and photos in one location with one crew. The planning is what makes it work: every post in the calendar should already know which shot it needs.

Choosing platforms

You do not need to be everywhere. Pick the two or three platforms your customers actually use. In the UAE that often means Instagram and TikTok for consumer brands, LinkedIn for business-to-business, and YouTube for longer films. Each platform wants its own format, so one video should be re-cut, not copy-pasted.

What a useful report measures

Follower counts are the least useful number. Look at reach among the right audience, saves and shares, profile visits, link clicks, messages and enquiries, and which individual posts drove them. A good report ends with decisions: do more of this, stop doing that.

What to put in the brief

To get comparable proposals, tell each agency:

  • Which platforms and languages
  • How many posts, Reels and stories per month
  • Whether you need content, management or both
  • Who replies to comments and messages, and within what time
  • Whether paid advertising is included, and the ad budget
  • Who approves content on your side and how fast

Common questions

What is the difference between social media management and content creation?

Content creation produces the videos, photos, graphics and captions. Social media management plans the calendar, publishes the content, handles comments and messages, and reports on performance. They can be bought separately or together.

How many posts per month does a brand need?

There is no fixed number. Consistency matters more than volume. Start from what your team can approve on time and what one or two shoot days can produce well, then adjust based on results.

Is paid advertising part of social media management?

Not automatically. Managing ads is a separate task with its own budget. Ask each agency whether ad management is included in the fee, and keep the advertising spend itself listed separately.
